The German word for recruitment is Anwerbung, and for advertising Werbung.
The verb werben means both to advertise and to recruit (either soldiers or in the sense of attracting readers or customers).
Does this suggest that when we advertise we are not so much selling something as recruiting? As someone who works daily in the company of arts marketing professionals, I find this an interesting thought. (Don't anybody say the word 'brand'; or 'symphony product' - argh!)
And verbunkos? That's a Hungarian recruiting dance from the 18th century. Same etymological source.
