A few weeks ago violist Tabea Zimmermann played with the SSO. Stumbling on Melons liked her playing a lot:
“Definitely, to coin a phrase, Zimmerman could play the Nokia phone tune and it would be compelling. But I am glad that Lentz’s piece had her very superior advocacy.”
Last week cellist Ralph Kirshbaum was in Sydney, prompting this response from SMH critic Peter McCallum:
“Before this, we had had the opportunity to hear the deep richness of Ralph Kirshbaum playing his Montagnana cello, which would have been pleasurable enough in Bah, Bah, Black Sheep, but which found an apt foil in the ruminative meandering lines of Bloch's Hebraic Rhapsody, Schelomo.”
Is this a critical trend?
Or do I sense an album concept coming on…
