I realise it would take Chandos next to no time to lovingly produce something like this from their archives (obituaries are written even quicker), but the release does seem a tad hasty.
For me, it’s the speedy timing combined with the fact that it’s for commercial sale that makes me queasy.
Now if it were a free “download these tracks in tribute to one of our most prolific and valued recording artists” gesture then I would feel very differently about it.
As it is, A Celebration has all the hallmarks of a sampler collection, with more excerpts/extracts in its track-listing than I’d ever be willing to pay for. Apparently there are no liner notes either, which really takes the tribute shine off things. I’m afraid Chandos is looking opportunistic rather than valedictory here.
